ELECTRIC GENERATOR In electricity generation , a generator is a device that converts motive power ( mechanical energy ) into electrical power for use in an external circuit . Sources of mechanical energy include steam turbines , gas turbines , water turbines , internal combustion engines and even hand cranks . The first electromagnetic generator, the Faraday disk, was invented in 1831 by British scientist Michael Faraday . Generators provide nearly all of the power for electric power grids . The reverse conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy is done by an electric motor , and motors and generators have many similarities. Many motors can be mechanically driven to generate electricity and frequently make acceptable manual generators.
What is Electromagnetic Induction ? Electromagnetic or magnetic induction is the production of an electromotive force (i.e., voltage) across an electrical conductor in a changing magnetic field . Michael Faraday is generally credited with the discovery of induction in 1831, and James Clerk Maxwell mathematically described it as Faraday's law of induction . Lenz's law describes the direction of the induced field. Faraday's law was later generalized to become the Maxwell–Faraday equation, one of the four Maxwell equations in his theory of electromagnetism . Electromagnetic induction has found many applications, including electrical components such as inductors and transformers , and devices such as electric motors and generators .
